A teenager claims to have invented a new sport: sewer fishing. Kyle Naegeli of Texas appears on a Youtube video catching catfish and bluegills from the storm drain next to his house. He claims that all you need is some line, bait and patience. He is shown dropping the bait down the sewer, then setting up a primitive indicator system to show when a fish has taken. and he lands a catfish that looks to be about 1lb 8oz. Another video shows him catching bluegills on a sabiki rig and an ice-fishing rod, while peering through the drain cover’s holes. Not great sport maybe, but good to see him showing some initiative. In fact, it’s not just “sport” in Texas, it seems. Another Youtube video here shows a Vietnamese angler fishing with a very primitive rod and hand reel in a storm drain, with the sound of traffic whizzing past him while he commentates (in Vietnamese) on what he’s doing. Unfortunately, the video does not actually show him catching anything, but he’s clearly a patient man… Clearly, it’s a branch of fishing that’s only a sport for the very hungry.
