Actress Gillian Anderson poses naked with a conger eel to publicise a campaign against destructive fishing practices. The campaign, run by the charity Fishlove, aims to raise awareness of unsustainable overfishing that is endangering the marine ecosystem. You might wonder how a celebrity taking their clothes off and draping a conger around her neck will stop trawlers from plundering the deep oceans, but the campaign has attracted a great deal of publicity. It is currently focusing on trying to persuade members of the European Parliament to ban the most destructive forms of deep-sea fishing in the north-east Atlantic, a move that faces fierce opposition, especially from French fishing interests. Several other celebrities are pictured on its website wearing nothing but a fish, including French actress Melanie Bernier, Wallander star Jeany Spark, The Beat That My Heart Skipped actress Aure Atika and Japanese fashion designer Kenzo. The fish involved, which I’m sure those who read this website are far more interested in, include mako shark, bonito, parrotfish, eel, herring and scabbardfish. You can see them here, along with other fish getting close and personal with celebrities like Jerry Hall, Emilia Fox, Terry Gilliam and Greta Scacchi. The unlikely inspiration behind Fishlove is Moshimo, a restaurant in Brighton, southern England, whose co-owner Nicholas Rohl set it up in 2009 with Greta Scacchi.
